The Anna Lindh Foundation is the first foundation from the constitution of the Euro Mediterranean Partnership which was created by the 37 member states. It was founded in November 2004 and is financed by the 37 states-members of the Partnership along with the economic aid of the European Committee. The Foundation was created in order to promote intellectual, social and cultural dialogue between the participating countries, as well as the adoption of behaviour of hospitality and respect.
It is also the first Euro Mediterranean foundation that resides beyond the EU, in Egypt. It is accommodated in the Library of Alexandria and in the Swedish Institute there. The main objective of this initiative is to bring in contact people and organisations from the two sides of Mediterranean, giving accent, via the education and training, in the development of human potential.
The dialogue, however, does not constitute the main goal itself but the means for the fight against racism, xenophobia, as well as against all kinds of discrimination, and extremism, from anywhere if it emanates. Via the dialogue, the Foundation aspires to ensure the defence of freedom of expression at the same time, however, with the respect of human rights and the principles that defend the members and the teams of these societies.
The youth as social team as well as the immigrants and the education as action constitute priorities in the Anna Lindh Foundation’s action plan.
The Foundation functions as Network of Networks, i.e. the 37 National Networks, members of which can become not-governmental organisations and other cultural institutions that are interested in the aims of the Foundation and are activated in the following sectors:
• the literature and the arts,
• the cultural heritage,
• the democratisation, Human Rights and the role of woman in the society,
• the youth,
• the education and the communication,
• the scientific research,
• the environment and the sustainable development.
Also, in order to serve better its aims, the Foundation seeks to collaborate closely with the institutions of the Local Government, the Media as well as with other private and governmental cultural institutions.
The role of National Networks is particularly important. For this reason, the Anna Lindh Foundation gives particular importance in their good and effective operation and is consulted them in regular basis.
