The Centre of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Sofia organizes Greek language courses for adults who would like to study in Greek institutions of higher education or wish to get in touch with contemporary Greek culture.

Duration of the Greek language programme: one academic year, from October until July. (The exact dates are announced at least one month before the courses begin).

The Centre can also offer intensive programmes (which last 3, 4 or 6 months) as well as special classes for children and companies.

Teaching courses

Classes take place Monday to Friday every week; each class last 45 minutes. Total number of teaching hours per week: 4 to 8, depending on the programme (regular or intensive).

Teaching material

Some of the handbooks used in the courses are:
- Prof. George Babiniotis, "Greek Language",
- Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, "Modern Greek for foreigners"
- Prof. Stoina Poromanska, "Modern Greek for beginners" and "Modern Greek for advanced"
- Froso Arvanitaki, series "Communicate in Greek"
- Audiovisual material like the series "Filoglossia +" and others

Number of students

A minimum number of 10 students and a maximum of 14 are required for each class.

Course Structure

Beginners Level (divided into two levels: A1 and A2)

The student is capable of understanding a simple conversation or a text in the media on well-known matters of everyday life. The student can communicate in simple words, understands the general meaning of a simple written text and is able to write brief, simple texts dealing with everyday life situations.

Intermediate Level (divided into two levels: B1 and B2)

The student is capable of understanding the general meaning and some important details of a conversation or a text. He or she can also express personal views on issues of everyday life, understands the general meaning and the main details of a written text and is able to write a letter to a friend, to describe people and events, etc.

Advanced Level (divided into two levels: C1 and C2)

The student is fully capable of understanding concrete information and a conversation or a text on a wide variety of subjects. The student can express himself/herself with fluency and ease in most business contexts.

Very Advanced Level (divided into two levels: D1 and D2)

The student is capable of understanding fully whatever he/she listens or reads. The student is able to write and talk about complicated issues dealing with his social or professional life with great ease and uses a rich, precise vocabulary.
